Cloud computing leads technology listings as a tech trend to watch. Gartner has identified cloud computing as one of its top 10 strategic technologies for 2010, and the GSA just announced nearly two million dollars in savings from cloud computing applications in USA.gov.
The Department of Defense (DoD) is taking notice and in March of 2010 announced that it is drafting an overarching strategy for enterprise-wide service delivery. The guidelines coming later this year will establish governance in mandatory, shared, and functional capabilities and begin DoD's migration to the cloud, expected to begin in early 2011.
This leaves DoD asking some important questions:
- As cloud computing and virtualization become not just an option but a way-of-business, how will DoD consolidate and optimize servers, storage and networking for greater efficiency, greater security, and increased cost savings?
- What other technologies will DoD leverage to optimize their IT infrastructures?
